The intercambio is the partnership between the HS department and the community of Arrazola. The HS department provides opportunities for the artisans of Arrazola to raise awareness of their art, culture and sustainability project. Artisans are invited to SJSU and Franklin McKinley elementary school for presentations and sales of Alebrijes. Artisans stay with members of the U.S. intercambio to decrease costs and exchange cultural perspectives. Although the artisans pay their own way the intercambio supports them once they are here with lodging and opportunities to exhibit their art. Part of the exchange are the activities that SJSU students provide in Arrazola during the annual spring break trip. Activities include reforestation, for the sustainability of the trees that provide the raw material for the Alebrijes, and promoting health in their community.
